In view of the huge variety of environmental and socio-economic conditions to be found throughout the world, it is extremely difficult to identify which farming practices are appropriate or most efficient for what sort of circumstances. This book represents an attempt to isolate and identify some of the best and most successful techniques and practices from peasant farmers around the world, so that they can be offered as options for rural farmers everywhere.

Japanese agricultural experts and Overseas Cooperative Volunteers have complied over 200 examples of useful farming practices from countries such as Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Nepal Burma, India, Indonesia and the Philippines. International institutions such as the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) have also provided information and techniques.

Nine separate areas are covered in this new edition: rice, horticulture, animal husbandry, agricultural engineering, sericulture, farming machines and tools forestry, fisheries and upland crops (for example, potatoes and maize). Each technique, or piece of equipment, is described with its uses and merits highlighted. A panel of experts has add ed its comments as to the value, suitability and limitations of each entry.

Although the English translation of this book (originally written in Japanese) Leaves something to be desired, Useful Farming Practices should prove an informative and useful reference work for all those engaged in agricultural extension and for all personnel involved in transferring low-cost, appropriate technology in the attempt to improve small-scale farming operations throughout the tropics.
