Paid educational leave

Paid educational leave is granted to workers for educational purposes for a specified period during working hours, with adequate financial entitlements. Such leave should be granted to all workers on an equal basis without discrimination on the grounds of race, colour, sex, religion, political opinion, national extraction or social origin.

Paid educational leave should be accorded for:

• training at any level;
• general, social and civil education;
• trade union education.

It should allow:

• the acquisition, improvement and adaptation of occupational and functional skills;

• the competent and active participation of workers and their representatives in the life of the community;

• the human, social and cultural advancement of workers; and

• continuing education and training.

The period of paid educational leave should be considered as a period of effective service for all entitlements.
