Respect for cultural identity

Recognition and, wherever practicable, assistance should be given to workers in respect of their cultural identity, religious practices, linguistic abilities, national origin, political opinion or other characteristics.

All cultural, religious and other related needs of the workforce should be identified and policies should be adopted, having regard to the need to prevent discrimination in employment, to permit the:

• observance of religious holidays and prayer or meditation times;
• observance of a mourning period for a deceased relative;
• observance of special dietary regimes and medical practices; and
• wearing of traditional dress (costume), beards and hairstyles.

Linguistic needs should be identified and policies should be adopted to provide for, where appropriate, language training, interpretation and translation facilities, specifically in the areas of:

• personnel policies and grievance procedures;
• work manuals, instructions, and other necessary work material; and
• safety signs and notices.
