Small-scale horn processing
Horn, a noble, abundant and low-cost raw material, can often serve as a substitute for plastics in the production of a variety of useful and decorative articles. The use of horn offers some socio-economic advantages to many developing countries, as it can yield employment and income. Traditional techniques are available - but they need to be rationalised, adapted in terms of appropriate technology, and made more widely known.
That is precisely the aim of this publication, which is the outcome of collaboration between horn-processing artisans and ILO technicians. The manufacture of a variety of objects from horn (including combs, spoons, wall lamps and ornaments) is explained in detail, with numerous illustrations. The book should be a useful tool for the training of horners, as it provides them with a simple and comprehensive manual of techniques used in the processing of horn.
