Foreword

Drugs play a very important role in the delivery of health care in Tanzania. The availability of drugs in health facilities is often a leading motive for people to visit them. Lack of drugs on the other hand tend to keep them away, as a result preventive services may become underutilized.

It is therefore of utmost importance to maintain adequate supplies of essential drugs within the Health Care System.

This manual tries to highlight the important documents, plans and elements, aiming at achieving adequate supplies and use of drugs by our health care workers:

- the National Drug Policy, approved by the Cabinet in 1991
- The Masterplan for the Pharmaceutical Sector for Tanzania Mainland 1992-2000
- Hospital Therapeutic Committees.

The intention of the manual is to inform you about all these developments in order to allow you to adjust your own plans and strategies accordingly.

Any constructive comments will highly be appreciated.
