This will be implemented by a Drug Registration Unit, whose goal it is to allow only registered, safe, effective, essential drugs of acceptable quality in the market. Only drugs, registered by the unit will be allowed into Tanzania. Each drug will be registered manufacturer specific. If the same drug is available from more than one manufacturer, it thus has to be registered for each of them, since their premises and production procedures may be totally different.
As soon as the procedures to register drugs have started, a transition period will be entered, after which only registered products are allowed. The responsibility for the registration of a drug lies with its manufacturer(s) and/or importer(s). No drugs or importations are excluded from this requirement. Donations or drug procurements for the public sector are therefore also subject to all registration requirements.
The only way to effectively control drugs, moving in the Tanzanian market, is to adhere strictly to registration requirements. Otherwise substandard counterfeit Pharmaceuticals may become a serious threat in Tanzania too. A Drug Registration Committee will support the activities of the unit. Computerised drug registers will be kept to enable fast access to information on the drugs in the market.
