An already existing Drug Inspection Unit is responsible for the inspection of all drug production and distribution enterprises, including importers, manufacturers, wholesalers and retail establishments. The activities of this unit will be gradually developed to cover the whole country. The unit will support the development of appropriate standards for the various types of enterprises (private as well as public establishments in the pharmaceutical sector). It will give support to their implementation and subsequently enforce adherence to them.
Important part will be the development of local Tanzanian Good Manufacturing Practise standards (GMP) to enable GMP certification of the local industries. Inspectors will be trained to adequately implement and maintain certification strategies to ensure drug quality. This is not only important for the local drug market, but also a prerequisite for export of Pharmaceuticals within the framework of the WHO Certification Scheme.
The capacity of the Drug Inspection Unit will be increased to enable better monitoring of the drug market in Tanzania. It is envisaged to implement zonal drug inspection offices, particularly in border areas.
