5.4 Malaria due to vivax/ovale

In cases of p. vivax and p. ovale, the chloroquine course should be followed by primaquine to eradicate persistent liver forms.

	*Primaquine*
Adult	15 mg base once daily for 14 days
Children	0.25 mg/kg base once daily for 14 days

NOTE Where possible patients should be screened first for glucose - 6 - phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. However, if suspected but not possible to confirm, reduce dosage as follows:

Primaquine 30 mg base once a week for 8 weeks.
