7.1 General Guidelines

Accurate laboratory-proven diagnosis of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) is not always possible. The treatment recommended in this section is based on diagnosis of STD associated syndromes. Contact tracing is encouraged as an important means of preventing further spread. Appropriate health education should be given at every opportunity.

First line

therapy is recommended when the patient makes his/her first contact with the health care facility.

Second line

therapy is administered when first line therapy has failed and re-infection has been excluded.

Third line

therapy should only be used when expert attention and adequate laboratory facilities are available, and where results of treatment can be monitored.

In order to ensure complete cure, doses LESS than those recommended must NOT be administered. The use of inadequate doses of antibiotics encourages the growth of resistant organisms which will then be very difficult to treat.
