12.1.3.2 Treatment guidelines Category II

These guidelines are given according to the National TB and Leprosy programme (NTLP) which are:

Standard regimen:

Streptomycin: give 1 g (IM)
every 24 hours for 8 weeks (for those weighing 50 kg or more and aged 40 years or less)

 

OR

 

give 750 mg every 24 hours for 8 weeks for those weighing less than 50 kg and aged 40 years or less.

Children:

Streptomycin: give 15 mg/kg body weight IM every 24 hours for 8 weeks.

For smear negative pulmonary and extra pulmonary tuberculosis, use the standard regimen. If streptomycin cannot be given (e.g. because of severe side effects), substitute

Ethambutol: 25 mg/kg body weight every 24 hours for 8 weeks.


NOTE

• If Ethambutol is to be given for more than 8 weeks reduce to 15 mg/kg body weight.
• Ethambutol should not be given to children.

For newly diagnosed (previously untreated) smear positive patients use the short-course regimen as follows:

Dosages in children:

Streptomycin: give 15 mg/kg body weight (not more than 1 g) every 24 hours.

Rifampicin: give 10 mg/kg body weight (not more than 600 mg) every 24 hours.

Pyrazinamide: give 30 mg/kg body weight (not more than 2 g) every 24 hours.

Thiazina: see table above.


NOTE • Streptomycin will be replaced by Ethambutol step wise in the country (starting 1992). In case of side effects with Thiazina, Ethambutol plus Isoniazid must be used.
