6.2.5 Tinea Pedis (Athlete's Foot)

This is a very common fungal infection and is often the source of infection at other sites.

Treat any bacterial superinfection first:

First choice	*Potassium permanganate* 1:4000 soak the feet in the solution twice daily, keep the feet as dry as possible. Then apply: *Gentian violet* 0.5% solution twice daily
Second choice	If fails to respond, try *Miconazole cream 2%*
	OR
	*Clotrimazole cream 1%.*

ADVISE frequent change of socks/footwear, use of cotton socks, thorough drying between toes after bathing, separating the opposing skin surfaces (e.g. with a piece of gauze), will prevent infection and speed-up healing.
